Undergraduate Concentrations

Agroecology
Students in the Agroecology Concentration learn how agriculture affects ecosystems, through courses on plants, plant pests, ecology, and environmental issues. The Agroecology Concentration addresses ecologically based management of cropping systems, stewardship of the environment, and sustainable food production systems.

Biological Sciences
The Biological Sciences Concentration is designed for students who plan to do graduate study or who want professional positions that require more basic science than is included in the other Crop Sciences concentrations. Basic sciences courses offered by the Department of Crop Sciences and by other departments of the university are emphasized. Students follow a first year program of science and general education requirements similar to students in other Crop Sciences concentrations. Programs for the second, third and fourth year are planned in consultation with the student's faculty advisor in the area of biological sciences.

Crop Agribusiness
Students in the Crop Agribusiness Concentration learn about agronomic production and business management through courses in crop sciences, soils, and agricultural and consumer economics. Crop Agribusiness applies the principles of crop production in a business setting. Students develop a broad appreciation for plant production by studying entomology, plant pathology, weed science and soils. The agribusiness courses help students develop business skill in management, marketing, and finance.

Crops
Students in the Crops Concentration learn how crop plants grow and are grown through courses in plant sciences, soils, pest management, and the basic sciences. Students learn how the principles of basic sciences apply to the production of agronomic crops, including soil fertility, plant growth, and management of weeds, insects and diseases.

Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology
The Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology Concentration emphasizes courses in the basic sciences, including a strong foundation in biology and genetics. Students are encouraged to participate in an independent study in a molecular biology laboratory to gain experience in applying laboratory skills

Plant Protection
The Plant Protection Concentration emphasizes how plants grow and the diseases, insects and weeds that can damage them. Students in plant protection study a variety of topics in crop production, soils, and the physical sciences.
